Progressive Breakfast: Trump Is No FDR: Public Electricity Proves it

MORNING MESSAGE

Bryce Oates
Trump Is No FDR: Public Electricity Proves it
Trump is no FDR, no matter what he claims. To see why, we need look no further than his efforts to dismantle one of FDR’s greatest achievements: public investment in electric power.

McCain Diagnosed With Brain Cancer

AZ Sen. McCain has brain cancer. CNN:“Sen. John McCain is suffering from a gliobastoma tumor, an aggressive form of cancer… The Arizona senator’s absence from Washington in recent days has come at a politically inopportune time for Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell as he has desperately tried to find a majority to repeal and replace Obamacare. This week, after the health care push floundered, McCain broke ranks and called for discussions with Democrats and a committee process to finally provide ‘Americans with access to quality and affordable health care.'”

Repeal Would End Health Care for 32m

CBO says latest health bill would leave 32M more uninsured in 2026. CBS:“Thirty-two million more people would become uninsured over the next decade under a plan to repeal Obamacare now and replace it later, according to a cost estimate released Wednesday evening by the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office (CBO). The CBO score also projects 17 million more people would become uninsured next year, compared to current law. It also estimates that average premiums would increase by about 25 percent.”

Trump Threatens to End Insurance for Low-Income Americans

Trump threatens to cut off low-income Americans from coverage. DailyKOS:“Trump made a direct threat to insurance companies on the Obamacare exchanges — and a threat to the Senate, too. In essence, he said: If you don’t do something, I’m going to destroy this whole thing… That would (end) the cost-sharing reduction payments to insurers that help pay for coverage for lower-income people—millions of them. Trump has been threatening these payments for months, and in fact it’s his threats that have caused instability in the markets, that have caused insurers to leave the exchanges, and are driving up premiums.”

Gore Joins Single-Payer Chorus

Al Gore says time for single-payer health has come. Common Dreams:“On the heels of what appeared to be Trumpcare’s final collapse on Monday and in the midst of growing grassroots demands for Democratic lawmakers to embrace a “bold” agenda, former Vice President Al Gore said… he believes the United States should move toward a single-payer system that guarantees healthcare for every American. ‘I believe we ought to have single-payer healthcare. The private sector has not shown any ability to provide good, affordable healthcare for all,’ Gore said.”

Sessions Wants Your Money

Bipartisan opposition to Sessions’s new civil-forfeiture rules. The Atlantic:“Attorney General Jeff Sessions rolled back a series of Obama-era curbs on civil-asset forfeiture on Wednesday, strengthening the federal government’s power to seize cash and property from Americans without first bringing criminal charges against them.”

ALEC in Denver

ALEC Is Meeting This Week in Denver. Here’s What You Need to Know About It. BillMoyers.com:“There will be a debate on the ALEC draft model bill to repeal the 17th Amendment, but many other controversial issues will be on the ALEC agenda as the meeting gets underway tomorrow. ALEC will be debating bills related to sexual assault on college campuses, campus protest, taxpayer vouchers for private schools and well-off families, the rollback of popular renewable energy programs, the dismantling the Affordable Care Act and more.”

Voter Fraud Commission Meets

Trump, Pence defend voter fraud panel at first meeting. LA Times:“President Trump and Vice President Mike Pence opened the first meeting of the White House’s voter-fraud task force with a vigorous defense of the commission’s mission, even as critics questioned its transparency, impartiality and data-collection efforts. Pence, who chairs the commission, said it ‘has no preconceived notions or preordained results’ and will work to ‘enhance the American people’s confidence in our electoral system.’ Critics, however, have said the commission appears to have been stacked with members who support Trump’s unfounded claims that millions of fraudulent votes were cast in the 2016 election.

Dallas Policeman Indicted for Murder

Cop who killed black ninth grader indicted on murder charge. ThinkProgress:“The police officer who shot and killed 15-year-old Jordan Edwards has been indicted for murder. Dallas County District Attorney Faith Johnson announced Monday that Roy Oliver, 37, will also face four counts of aggravated assault by a public servant after firing with a rifle into a car carrying Edwards and other teenagers. Edwards, a black ninth grader at Mesquite High School, was unarmed and leaving a party in late April when he was shot by Oliver, a white police officer, in Balch Springs, a suburb of Dallas, Texas.”

More from OurFuture.org:

A New NAFTA Must Help, Not Hurt, Workers. Leo Gerard:“Substantial progress must be made for workers in a renegotiated NAFTA. A goal of “do no harm” is grossly inadequate for the administration that promised to cure the injury that international trade inflicted on America’s workers.”
