What is a recall?
When a manufacturer or the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) determines that a vehicle creates an unreasonable risk to safety or fails to meet minimum safety standards, the manufacturer is required to fix that vehicle at no cost to the owner. That can be done by repairing it, replacing it, offering a refund (for equipment) or, in rare cases, repurchasing the car.
What should I do if my vehicle is included in this recall?
If your vehicle is included in this recall, it is very important that you get it fixed as soon as possible given the potential danger to you and your passengers if it is not addressed. You should receive a separate letter in the mail from the vehicle manufacturer, notifying you of the recall and explaining when the remedy will be available, whom to contact to repair your vehicle, and to remind you that the repair will be done at no charge to you. If you believe your vehicle is included in the recall, but you do not receive a letter in the mail from the vehicle manufacturer, please call NHTSA's Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236, or contact your vehicle manufacturer or dealership.
Thank you for your attention to this important safety matter and for your commitment to helping save lives on America's roadways.

*Local police agency suggests that Hyundai accelerated on its own before fatal crash

Local police agency suggests that Hyundai accelerated on its own before fatal crash

Hyundai says runaway vehicle complaints are simply "pedal misapplication"

By Amy Martyn

Police investigating a fatal car crash between a Hyundai and a semi-trailer truck in Pennsylvania are reportedly looking into the possibility that the Hyundai accelerated on its own.
Victims Oscar Johnson, Willie Byrd, and Charles Barnes were traveling in Johnson’s 2009 Hyundai Santa Fe in Erie on July 7. Witnesses told police that the car was speeding and swerving through traffic. Surveillance footage, according to the police, shows the Santa Fe swerving to avoid two vehicles before running a red light and crashing into a semi-trailer.
The driver of the trailer truck was not harmed. But Johnson and Barnes, who were both 65, and Byrd, 72, all died at the scene. The men reportedly knew each other through a local church.

Medical or mechanical issue examined

Erie Police Department Chief Donald Dacus told the Erie Times-News on Monday that investigators believe the accident was either caused by a medical episode or a mechanical problem in the Santa Fe. In an interview with the newspaper, Dacus referenced  “numerous consumer reports nationwide” that descibe an “accelerator that sticks.”
An interview that another investigator gave the local paper on Wednesday was even more assertive in pinning blame on the Hyundai. Sgt. Jeff Annunziata told the paper that he believed the crash was caused by a “mechanical” issue within the vehicle. The person driving the Hyundai -- police have not yet said who was actually driving Johnson's car, as two of the victims' bodies were ejected from the vehicle on impact -- acted heroically by swerving to avoid two cars, the sergeant said.
“He really did a heroic thing doing what he did,” the sergeant told the paper. The police department has not yet announced its final, official determination.

Hyundais have been investigated in Asia

The little-understood phenomenon of a car accelerating on its own while the brakes fail is often referred to as sudden unintended acceleration. Numerous vehicle makes and models, including Hyundais, are suspected of having the defect.
Government agencies in both Singapore and South Korea have investigated possible sudden unintended acceleration in Hyundai vehicles, but the government agencies in both countries ruled in favor of the carmaker. South Korea and Singapore officials said that the drivers were at fault for confusing their gas pedal with the brake.
Still, those rulings vindicating Hyundai did not quash concerns about runaway Hyundais abroad. In August 2016, black box footage that appeared to show a Hyundai speeding on its own as its panicked driver swerved to avoid people was published to YouTube. Three passengers died in that crash.
Hyundai’s spokespeople have maintained in interviews with ConsumerAffairs that “pedal misapplication” on the part of confused drivers is what actually causes the crashes.
The company's press team has not yet made a statement about the crash in Erie.

Friends recall warnings from victim

Consumers in the United States can submit complaints about their cars to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration website. A search of “Hyundai” and “unintended acceleration” in the agency’s public database turns up more than three dozen reports.
The 2009 Hyundai Santa Fe specifically has six public complaints about occasions when the car “suddenly accelerated.”
“ON MARCH 24, 2010, MY CO-WORKER AND I WERE IN MY 2009 HYUNDAI SANTA FE WHEN IT SUDDENLY ACCELERATED,” reads one of those complaints. “I PUSHED THE BRAKE TO THE FLOOR AND IT WOULD NOT SLOW DOWN. I THEN PUT ON THE EMERGENCY BRAKE. BOTH FEET WERE EXTENDED TO THE FLOOR HOLDING THESE BRAKES DOWN.
“THE CAR DID SLOW DOWN BUT WOULD NOT STOP. I HAD TO TAKE A LEFT TURN ACROSS THE HIGHWAY (THERE WAS FORTUNATELY A BREAK IN THE TRAFFIC), I PUT THE CAR IN PARK AND TURNED OFF THE ENGINE. IT MADE A VERY LOUD NOISE THAT LASTED ABOUT 10 SECONDS OR SO. WE JUMPED OUT OF THE CAR AS IF IT WERE ON FIRE. IT'S CURRENTLY AT THE SHEEHY DEALERSHIP IN WALDORF, MD. WE ARE AWAITING THEIR DIAGNOSIS.”

Johnson had also complained about acceleration problems in his own 2009 Hyundai Santa Fe, the local newspaper reported. Friends of Johnson’s told the Erie Times-News that Johnson had purchased the car only five days prior to the crash, and complained about an unspecified problem with the accelerator during that period.

Faulty Brakes Force Volkswagen Recall of 385,000 German Cars

Faulty Brakes Force Volkswagen Recall of 385,000 German Cars

German automaker Volkswagen has been hit with a recall of 385,000 cars sold in Germany, according to a report at news agency DPA. The company’s VW, Audi and Skoda brands are affected by the recall.
The braking control system on the vehicles may not function properly under certain conditions, such as when a driver oversteers, understeers or slams the brakes. The recall requires a software update to the antilock brake system, according to DPA.
While a serious issue, VW faces an even larger problem in its home country. Earlier last week Germany’s transport ministry put pressure on automakers to update the engine management software in 12 million diesel cars currently on the country’s roads.
Not all those cars were manufactured by VW, and the total cost to patch the software is estimated to cost $1.7 billion to $2.8 billion.
VW was hammered in September of 2015 for using a diesel emissions program that was designed to report a lower emissions score during tests than its cars actually produced when operating normally. That cheating scandal has already cost the company billions.
The latest push by German authorities is likely tied to upcoming elections in September. The government wants the carmakers to bear the cost of updating the emissions systems in the diesel-powered fleet in an effort to cut nitrogen oxide pollution by 25%.

Amazingly kind!

I purchased a BRAND NEW 2012 Toyota from Route 44 Toyota on April 23, 2012, anticipating many years of FUEL EFFICIENT driving.

It's almost a year since I was forced to leave that BRAND NEW CAR with NO BRAKES on the property of ROUTE 44 TOYOTA.

IMO, I have been amazingly kind.

Reviewing the obscene volume of paperwork that killed more trees than this entire issue deserved, it was never posted that Attorney Daniel Viera threatened to charge me STORAGE - $25.00 per day for a vehicle that is not drivable.

Copies of all of Attorney Daniel Viera's letters have gone to Timothy Bruno, who apparently is the 'General Manager' of Route 44 Toyota and the husband of the owner.

Please tell me again how Route 44 Toyota values its customers.

Was I supposed to end up like this?

Toyota U.S.A. in their ridiculous 'Discovery' process has forced me to review this offensive episode of time and letters from these Dilly, Dally, Delay & Stall law firms will be posted.

It is truly astounding the lengths to which these clowns will stoop instead of resolving a problem with integrity.

Let's not blame the legal profession. It's businesses like Route 44 Toyota that don't want to repair or replace a defective vehicle, along with a manufacturer who seems to be concealing a defect that will precipitate the next Toyota recall that will cost them money.

Hiding????

What is Toyota hiding?

Was it 5 months ago that Toyota expressed a vague interest in inspecting my Toyota with NO BRAKES?

Yet Ms. New York, the one who arrived late to court because she failed to leave adequate time, only recently delivered her requests, insisting in the documents that an inspection be conducted within 45 days and placing unreasonable conditions on same.

Big Sigh!

A Petition for Defect Investigation into Toyota's BRAKE FAILURES has been submitted to NHTSA.

The NTSHA investigator has indicated his willingness to conduct an inspection.

TOYOTA has been remarkably UNCOOPERATIVE!

What are they hiding???

Do they already know they have a BRAKE PROBLEM????

Documents indicate Toyota concealed the SUA [Sudden Unintended Acceleration] problem for a decade while innocents were killed.

Does Toyota know about the BRAKE DEFECT?

Are they preventing NHTSA from discovering it and then jeopardizing the lives of innocent victims?

Thank you, Route 44 Toyota!

A little paranoid are we?

Thanks for jacking my stats up, but what is it you guys are doing? Are you sharing this????

Life is simple!

You sold me a car that had some problems.

You refused to repair or replace it.

How can I drive a car with NO BRAKES?

Those folks outside the Plymouth Court House today asked that question.

The next time I share that information, other folks will ask the same question.

How can I drive a car with NO BRAKES???

An attorney even asked me to explain what SLAPP was. So I was forced to explain that Attorney Dan Viera threaten a SLAPP suit because you folks don't want to settle this matter and thinks he can bully.

They found it really interesting when I explained what Mark Viera said.

Big sigh! This was kinda fun meeting all those people and explaining how Route 44 Toyota deals with customers. They were sure impressed!

They were even more impressed considering Toyota's most recent ad campaign - Let;s Go Places Just Don't Count on Stopping!

What does it say about Toyota when they don't even stand behind their product?

Defective Vehicles Jeopardizing Safety

Did we all suddenly become expendable to Big Corporations?
Do they no longer have to make vehicles that stop or respond predictably?

While the Koch-funded Tea Baggers are mindlessly repeating the rhetoric of 'de-regulation' or whatever mantra is fashionable, don't we all want to be safe?

Whether it's Honda in this case or Toyota in my case, shouldn't the BRAKES of a vehicle respond predictably?

And shouldn't there be an adequately staffed federal agency to ensure our safety?

How many people did Toyota kill before they were forced to address Sudden Acceleration?

Posted: Mar 14, 2013

TOKYO (AP) - Honda is recalling nearly 250,000 vehicles worldwide for brakes that can suddenly kick in even when the driver isn't braking.

No crashes have been reported related to the defect.

Honda Motor Co. said Thursday it was recalling more than 183,000 vehicles in the U.S., including the Acura RL, Acura MDX and Pilot models.

More than 56,000 vehicles were recalled in Japan, affecting the Odyssey, Legend, StepWgn and Elysion models.

Also being recalled are nearly 8,000 vehicles in Canada, nearly 1,000 in Australia, about 300 in Mexico and 70 in Germany. The vehicles were produced from March 2004 through May 2006.

Some drivers complained about the problem, including 17 in Japan and one in the U.S.

The problem is caused by improper electronics and wiring in the vehicle-stability-assist system.

A Massachusetts woman....

...filed a "Petition for Defect Investigation." [Carrie Carvalho of Arlington, Mass, link to article and petition below]

A pretty dull and boring thing really.

Unless you have a vehicle with a defect.....such as mine.

This Massachusetts woman precipitated a Recall of a vehicle to correct BRAKE PROBLEMS!

In her case, the BRAKES engaged at highway speeds.

Oops!

In my case? NO BRAKES!

The dedicated folks at CENTER FOR AUTO SAFETY have written extensively and filed "Petitions for Defect Investigations" on our behalf, unbeknowst to us, attempting to protect all of us.

LIFE IS SIMPLE!

My NEW Toyota, purchased at Route 44 Toyota had NO BRAKES.

How can I drive a NEW vehicle with NO BRAKES?

Really?

And Toyota?

Following in the footsteps of that heroic Massachusetts woman, I filed a "Petition for Defect Investigation."

The reports below are posted on the NHTSA web site, representing 7 accidents, a total of 30 complaints and deserve investigation and correction.

Toyota Pretense

Toyota is recalling vehicles that have been on the road 10 years.

Will owners of Prius have to wait that long before Toyota fixes the BRAKES?

How many people will die before Toyota corrects the problem?

[The brake pedal of my Prius C traveled to the floor and was demonstrated repeatedly to a Route 44 Technician sitting in the passenger seat.]

Corolla, Lexus models recalled
January 31, 2013

Toyota Motor Corp. has announced recalls of 1 million vehicles, including some models of its Toyota Corolla and its Lexus IS sports sedan.

About 752,000 Corolla and Corolla Matrix cars are being recalled to fix an airbag control module that is susceptible to short-circuiting that could eventually cause the front airbags and seat belt pretensioners to deploy when they shouldn't.

The recall affects Corollas from the 2003 and 2004 model years. There have been two reported accidents and 18 injuries linked to the problem, said Brian Lyons, a Toyota spokesman.

For years, the Corolla has played a key role in Toyota's sales success in the United States. It was the second-best-selling compact car nationally last year with sales of 291,000 vehicles, second only to the Honda Civic, which sold about 318,000.

Toyota also said it will recall 270,000 IS sport sedans sold by its luxury Lexus division because a nut on the front windshield wiper arms could be insufficiently tight. If movement of the wipers is restricted by an external load, such as a buildup of snow on the windshield, one or both of the wipers could stop working.

The recall includes vehicles from the 2006 model year through the beginning of the 2013 model year.

There have been 25 reports of wipers not functioning correctly, but no reports of accidents as a result.

Toyota: Poppycock!

Pretending that Toyota is responsive is pure Poppycock!

Others have complained about BRAKE FAILURES of their Toyota vehicles, yet Toyota has ignored the problem.

How do you drive a vehicle with NO BRAKES?

Our Toyota Prius C is sitting on the property of Route 44 Toyota waiting for the multiple expensive law firms of Dilly, Dally, Delay and Stall to run up their fees.

Largest-ever Toyota recall is a new black eye

Just when Toyota's reputation was close to healing, a new issue appears that raises questions about quality

The new recall covers more than 7.4 million cars and trucks worldwide, including 2.5 million in the U.S., spanning the 2007 to 2009 model years. The problem is a faulty power window master switch. It can become sticky and if the wrong kind of lubricant is used on the switch it can be a fire risk.

Several fires have been reported.

STORY: Toyota recalls 7.43M vehicles

The lock problem does not appear to be a manufacturing defect, says Toyota spokesman Brian Lyons, but is blamed on "commercially available lubricants" used on switches after the vehicles left showrooms. Under the recall, technicians will apply an approved fluorine grease.

Safety advocate Sean Kane says he doubts that the problems occurred after manufacture. "There is a lot of smoke around this one," he says. And, he notes, the switch issue has been swirling for a while.
The recall comes as Toyota seemed to have largely put behind it the self-inflicted wounds from the 2009 and 2010 recalls of millions of vehicles over sticky gas pedals and floor mats that could trap the gas pedal.

In fact, many of the vehicles and model years in the latest recall also were involved in those earlier recalls. Toyota executives said at that time that the company's concentration on quality wavered in those years as it rushed to become the world's largest auto seller.

"The recall is another blemish on Toyota's reputation for quality," says Clarence Ditlow. "Toyota cut back on quality control from 2000 to 2010 in order to be the world's largest auto seller."

Even though the recall involves one part, the total number of vehicles is huge. But big number are increasingly the norm in recalls today because of:

-- Sheer sales. Huge global cars companies dominate the landscape more than ever.
-- Standardization. Car companies have maximized profits and efficiency by trying to sell each model in the same basic form around the world. They increasingly use the same basic platform under multiple models. And they use as many parts in common as possible across platforms.
-- Outsourced parts. Automakers do the final assembly of their cars, but many of the subassemblies, such as even whole door assemblies, now come from outside suppliers, making quality control complex.

Experts are divided about how much the current recall will damage Toyota's reputation anew.

Much has changed since Toyota's earlier string of recalls in 2010, says Karl Brauer, founder of TotalCarScore.com, an automotive ratings site.. "It would appear the stigma of a recall has been cast aside. It's clear automakers have learned from past mistakes, particularly Toyota, that a proactive recall is better than a reactive one."

But Van Conway, a corporate turnaround consultant in Birmingham, Mich., says the recall "is not positive and I think it will be viewed negatively by buyers in the next year."

Route 44 Toyota....the Love Story #2 The Celebration

The Celebration? Unlike so many other Toyota owners, we didn't end up in a pile of metal.

More importantly, we didn't injure others because of Toyota's Failures.

The expensive attorneys assure us that Route 44 Toyota is taking good care of my Toyota Prius C.

We sure miss seeing the smiling faces of the Service Department, especially Mark Vieira, the Service Manager. Well.....you just don't need much service if your Toyota is parked on their lot with NO BRAKES.

WASHINGTON, D.C. – The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) today announced that it is opening a formal investigation of the Toyota Prius Hybrid model year 2010 to look into allegations of momentary loss of braking capability while traveling over an uneven road surface, pothole or bump.

The Office of Defects Investigation has received 124 reports from consumers, including four reports alleging that crashes occurred. Investigators have spoken with consumers and conducted pre-investigatory field work.

“Safety is our top priority,” said Secretary Ray LaHood. “That is why in recent weeks NHTSA has also issued a consumer advisory on the recall of several models of Toyota vehicles and the Pontiac Vibe involving pedal entrapment and sticky accelerator pedals. We will continue to monitor these issues closely.”

Late Wednesday, Secretary LaHood spoke with Toyota president, Akio Toyoda, who reassured him that Toyota takes U.S. safety concerns seriously and puts safety at the top of the company’s priorities.

Consumer complaints about possible safety problems are one of NHTSA’s most important sources of information about vehicles. Officials review each one within a single business day and analyze the information to ensure trends are detected early.

Of the 100 investigations NHTSA opens every year, there are currently 40 open defect investigations, three of which involve Toyota. NHTSA has the most active defect investigation program in the world, opening or closing an investigation almost every week. Over the last three years, NHTSA’s defect and compliance investigations have resulted in 524 recalls involving 23.5 million vehicles.
NHTSA is advising owners of vehicles affected by recent Toyota recalls to contact their local dealership if they detect a problem. For more information, consumers should visit www.nhtsa.gov or call the NHTSA Vehicle Safety Hotline at (888) 327-4236.

IMO, Toyota failed to act until 124 Prius owners/drivers filed complaints in this instance. [Surely there were others who failed to file complaints - not everyone is on the internet or informed about filing complaints.]

In my case, the brakes were not lost briefly. There were NO BRAKES! There was NO rough road surface.

Let's not ignore that Toyota's failure to address and correct the SUA [Sudden Unitended Acceleration] problems killed 89 people. Toyota blamed that failure on "Driver Error" [documentation will follow].

Reason might tell you that were your vehicle hurtling forward, you'd make sure your foot was on the brake.

Toyota Prius C: Buyer Beware!

If you're in the new car market, there's really no reliable source of safety and performance.

The Prius C may not be it!

With only 841 miles, braking problems began....that was after some kind of quirky deal when the car went from battery to engine - causing a sensation of impact.

Meet the Prius c

In Moonglow
Super White

Two days ago, the brake pedal went to the floor and a warning light came on.

The vehicle was towed - no computer report was recorded for the warning light.

After receiving assurances from the Service Manager that the vehicle had been test driven, test driven and inspected by the manufacturer, I went to return the loaner and pick up my vehicle.

I was still in the parking lot when the brake pedal traveled to the floor and another warning light came on.

Although it's baffling that with all the test driving that was supposedly done, the failure recurred with me at the wheel, so be it.

Maybe I'm the first to experience this problem,

Cute little car, but I don't want to end my life in it!
