CounterCurrents: We Need Their Voices, And Yours!

Dear Friend,

Today we are concluding the serial publication of John Scales Avery's book "We Need Their Voices Today". The publication received mostly positive response. Some of you objected to some of the chapters. That's understandable. Countercurrents is all about throwing up ideas and challenging our conventional thought processes. Avery in his book brought out the voices of 20 important voices of the past to the present. We know we are facing one of the greatest crisis in the history of humanity. As Dr Arshad Khan reminded us a few days ago we are only 2 1/2 minutes to midnight. We are facing the Sixth Great Extinction. If we don't act today with all our resources we are finished! Collectively! So we need those voices to guide us today.  You can access the whole book here http://www.countercurrents.org/tag/we-need-their-voices-today/

Let me remind you that our fund raising is going on and that too at a slow place. Please lend a helping hand to keep CC survivehttp://www.countercurrents.org/subscription/

If you don't mind, and if you think the content of this news letter is critical for the dignified living and survival of humanity and other species on earth, please forward it to your friends and spread the word. It's time for humanity to come together as one family! You can subscribe to our news letter here http://www.countercurrents.org/news-letter/.

Behind The Scenes At The Saudi-Qatari Pissing Contest
by Thomas C Mountain

Saudi Arabia, with the bellicose support of President Trump, has launched a diplomatic and partial economic offensive against the ridiculously small state of Qatar and is dragging its allies, the United Arab Emirates in particular, into a potential major headache.

El-Sisi: Egypt’s Antihero And The Broader Regional Implications
by Soraya Sepahpour-Ulrich

With el-Sisi’s “democratic coup” which was handsomely rewarded, the dam project is on schedule to be completed by year’s end.    As Israel has expands and accelerates its wars of aggression, the wider implications of el-Sisi’s will reverberate throughout the region as serve-serving Arab leaders fight their own to execute Israel’s agenda.

Auguries Of Innocence And Navel-Gazing
by Denis A Conroy

Does our understanding of freedom depend on how we respond to two contra cosmological paradigms…namely the interaction between the ‘particular’ and the ‘universal’ …orif you will…the popular versus philosophical narratives that engage us in exercises that shape reality.

Koodankulam: The Facts Nation Should Know
by Ajmal Khan A T

This movement which got international attention and mass support from all over the country had posed serious threat towards the nuclear expansion of India hence, the nuclear establishment in India want to break the movement and want to suppress any dissent. It’s important to note that, apart from the existing illegalities, violations of procedure, new reactors are illegally going to be constructed in Koodankulam, government and the nuclear lobby wants to ensure no protest takes place against this. Hence, the leaders against the project has to be silenced, this is the context Republic TV claims to expose the leader of Koodankulam protest.

The European Commission, Google and Anti-Competition
by Dr Binoy Kampmark

On Tuesday, Google got a taste and lashing of Vestager’s wrath in hard and fast fashion. It took the form of a fine totalling $2.7 billion.  “In Europe, companies must compete on the merits regardless if they are European or not.  What Google has done is illegal under EU antitrust rules.”

Don’t Buy The “National Deficit/Debt” Scam That Steals From Working People
by Dr Nayvin Gordon

For decades the politicians have refused to tax the rich, the corporations and the banks. They choose instead to borrow to run the government. They borrow money from the rich, whom they refused to tax, and then pay them interest. Politicians keep telling us that the national debt is too high; they say we can’t afford to spend money on social services, healthcare and education.  They want us to spend our money for interest on the national debt. They want us to spend half of the national budget on weapons of war

Israel’s Efforts To Hide Palestinians From View No Longer Fools Young American Jews
by Jonathan Cook

Young American Jews will have to choose. Will they conspire, if only through their silence, in the erasure of the Palestinians carried out by Israel in their name? Or will they stand and fight, in the occupied territories, on campus, in their communities and, soon enough, in the corridors of power in Washington?

Sins, Rebirths And Disability
by Sheshu Babu

” You have committed sins in your last incarnation” - From the time I gained consciousness, I have been hearing this sentence from whoever speaks to me – irrespective of the age or relation of the person. This sentence has haunted me for long and when I heard even educated people say this sentence over and over even in towns and cities ( let alone in the village I was born), I am forced to think of the cause that makes people utter this sentence.
