Progressive Breakfast: A Vicious Cycle of Poison and Poverty

MORNING MESSAGE

Lois Gibbs
A Vicious Cycle of Poison and Poverty
America takes our most vulnerable families - poor or working poor - and houses them next to polluting industries, poisons their children and now wants to take away their access to health care. Let's fight back to end this vicious cycle.

GOP Scrambles for Health Votes

Republicans scramble to revise health bill in 48 hours. Politico:“Senate GOP leaders are scrambling to put together a revised Obamacare repeal bill in the next 48 hours, even as some Republicans question whether they can bridge a huge divide between moderates and conservatives that has stalled the legislation. Having tossed a July 4 deadline to vote on the measure, leaders weighed a raft of policy changes proposed by holdout senators and expressed confidence a compromise was near. Others weren’t so sure. ‘And pigs could fly,’ quipped Sen. John McCain.”
More optimism than progress on Senate health bill. CNN:“Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell still has a few more tricks up his sleeve to pass the health care bill. What he doesn’t have is much more time. The operation to get the votes is in overdrive at this point as leaders try to secure 50 as soon as possible so they can come back after the July 4 recess, get a new score from the Congressional Budget Office, pass a bill and move on to the rest of their agenda. There are still questions as to whether Republicans will have a new draft by the time they leave Friday.”
Here’s how Warren Buffett thinks we should fix American health care. Inc:“Warren Buffett appeared in a fascinating interview on PBS. Among other things, the Oracle of Omaha told Judy Woodruff that he believes a single-payer system in which the federal government provides insurance to all Americans was mostly likely the best solution to out-of-control health care costs. Although some form of single-payer system is in place in most developed countries, in the U.S. it has long been considered a left-of-center idea… in recent months, as Republicans have struggled to replace Obamacare (formally the Affordable Care Act), health insurers have eliminated offerings in some states, and premiums have continued their dramatic rise. And so the idea has gained support in some unexpected places.”
208,500 additional deaths could occur by 2026 under the Senate health plan. Vox:“If the Senate bill becomes law, 22,900 excess deaths will occur in 2020 — and the figure will grow over time. 26,500 extra deaths will take place in 2026. Over the next decade, we estimate that a total of 208,500 unnecessary deaths will occur if the law is passed. We also calculate anticipated additional deaths, state by state, using state-level coverage losses for the year 2026. The predicted excess deaths by state range from 30 in North Dakota to 2,992 in California in 2026 alone.”

Protestors Lead the Way

Demonstrators form human chain around Capitol to protest GOP healthcare bill. The Hill:“Planned Parenthood supporters and other opponents of the Republican effort to repeal and replace ObamaCare formed a human chain around the Capitol Wednesday afternoon in a massive protest amid GOP attempts to save their healthcare bill. Demonstrators held signs reading “Stand with Planned Parenthood” and “Don’t Take Away Our Care” while chanting “healthcare, now!” The goal of the protest was to form a continuous human chain around the entire Capitol.”
Trump succeeds where Obama failed – spawning a new wave of liberal activism. LA Times:“seemingly every week brings a new group with new designs: academics giving advice, librarians raising their voices, quilters taking up their sewing needles.”It turns out Trump, a president loathed by Democrats, is a far greater spur to liberal activism than the revered Barack Obama, a former community organizer who hoped to inspire a wave of officeholders and Democratic idealists. Instead, he presided over the hollowing-out of his party.”

Travel Ban Takes Hold

Trump travel ban takes partial effect.NYT:“Portions of President Trump’s travel ban will go into effect on Thursday, three days after the Supreme Court temporarily lifted legal blocks on the ban and agreed to review the case this fall. The court granted an exception for people with “bona fide relationships” in the United States, and advocates and experts expressed uncertainty about how the Trump administration would implement the decision.”
The U.S. has issued new visa criteria for 6 Muslim nations. TIME:“Visas that have already been approved will not be revoked, but instructions issued by the State Department Wednesday said that new applicants from Syria, Sudan, Somalia, Libya, Iran and Yemen must prove a relationship with a parent, spouse, child, adult son or daughter, son-in-law, daughter-in-law or sibling already in the United States to be eligible. The same requirement, with some exceptions, holds for would-be refugees from all nations that are still awaiting approval for admission to the U.S.”

DAPL Security Firm Challenged

TigerSwan faces suit for unlicensed operations in North Dakota. The Intercept:“TigerSwan, the private company behind a monthslong, multi-state surveillance operation targeting opponents of the Dakota Access Pipeline, illegally provided security and investigative services to the pipeline’s parent company, Energy Transfer Partners, despite being denied a license to do so, a new civil lawsuit alleges. Even after oil began to flow through the contested pipeline, and long after the crowded Dakota Access resistance camps gave way once again to empty prairie, TigerSwan continued its unlicensed security operations in North Dakota.”

What Happened to America’s Wealth? The Rich Hid It. Chuck Collins:“If you find yourself traveling this summer, take a closer look at America’s deteriorating infrastructure — our crumbling roads, sidewalks, public parks, and train and bus stations. Government officials will tell us ‘there’s no money’ to repair or properly maintain our tired infrastructure. Nor do we want to raise taxes, they say. But what if billions of dollars in tax revenue have gone missing?”
