Progressive Breakfast: Resistance in a Time of Gunfire

MORNING MESSAGE

Richard Eskow
Resistance in a Time of Gunfire
The smell of gun smoke had net yet lifted from an Alexandria baseball field when the calls for unity began. But unity doesn't mean silence, or inaction: issues like health care and gun violence need debate, and lives are at stake.

DHS Targets Undocumented Parents, Spares Kids For Now

Obama’s attempt to grant amnesty to millions of undocumented parents is over before it even began. The Atlantic:“U.S. Department of Homeland Security Secretary John Kelly signed a memorandum Thursday revoking an Obama-era program commonly known as DAPA, or Deferred Action for Parents of Americans and Lawful Permanent Residents. The program intends to offer a pathway to citizenship for illegal immigrant parents whose children are either residents or citizens of the U.S.
DACA remains in effect, for now. NBC:“On the fifth anniversary of the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program Thursday, the Trump administration formally revoked an Obama-era program intended to protect parents of U.S. citizens and legal residents who were in the country illegally… According to the press release by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, DACA will remain in effect. ‘It’s still really important to note that DACA still exists right,” Langarica said. “So folks need to renew their DACA. They should do that. If they think they’re eligible they should consult with an attorney.'”

More Guns, Not Less

New gun control action after congressional shooting? Don’t bet on it. CNN:“In the aftermath of the an attempted mass assassination of GOP congressmen on a baseball field Wednesday morning in Virginia, Capitol Hill buzzed with calls for unity and bipartisan prayers for wounded Louisiana Rep. Steve Scalise. And while some lawmakers argued it was time to address an increasingly toxic political environment, others, members of Congress but mostly partisan pundits (and a son of President Donald Trump, though not the President himself), rushed to blame the attack on political rivals. Notably absent from the chatter was any serious discussion of restricting access to the kind of firearm used by the alleged shooter, 66-year-old James Hodgkinson.”

The Wedding Planner

Trump appoints family wedding planner to oversee housing in New York. NY Daily News: “She’s arranged tournaments at Trump golf courses, served as the liaison to the Trump family during his presidential campaign, and even arranged Eric Trump’s wedding. Now President Trump has appointed longtime loyalist Lynne Patton — who has zero housing experience and claims a law degree the school says she never earned — to run the office that oversees federal housing programs in New York. Patton was appointed Wednesday to head up the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development’s Region II, which includes New York and New Jersey, where she’ll oversee distribution of billions of taxpayer dollars.”

Hiding Health

Senate GOP’s health care bill is so secret not even Trump’s health secretary has seen it. ThinkProgress:“No one seems to know what’s in the Senate’s Trumpcare bill. Not even Trump’s top health care adviser. At a Thursday hearing, Sen. Dick Durbin (D-IL) asked Health and Human Services Secretary Tom Price, ‘Have you or anyone in your department seen what the Senate Republicans are working on in terms of their version of Trumpcare?’ Price began his response with a caveat that he has talked to senators who care about health care, but followed it up with the stunning admission that he had not yet seen any part of the bill.”

More from OurFuture.org:

The Senate’s Silent and Deadly Health Care Repeal. Sarah Warner:“Republican leaders in the Senate are very quietly – and very secretly – forcing through a radical health care repeal that threatens the lives of people across the country. It’s up to us to make noise and demand our voices be heard.”
Winning Clean Energy & Climate Justice for All. Tony Pierce:“We fight not just for energy security – we fight for energy sovereignty. It’s not just about getting enough food resources, enough energy resources; it’s about who gets to own and control the distribution of those resources.”
Our Movement Moment: Beyond Neo-Liberalism & Trumpism. Maria-Elena Letona:“We have a very hopeful framework on how to build political power from a very different perspective: one that is grounded in the people. One that goes to the doors, engages people one on one, and builds relationships. “
Resistance & Power: Our March to Springfield. Samantha Nichols:“I choose to use my body to not only resist but to fight for something better. No one gets to gets to tell me what I do with my body, so I choose to embody justice, and fight for the world we all need and deserve.”
