Vermont’s U.S. Senator Patrick Leahy: Our nation is at a precipice

Our nation is at a precipice.
President Trump's sudden firing of FBI Directory Comey was an authoritarian act. Trump's rash action came just days after Comey requested more resources for the bureau's investigation into Russia's interference in the 2016 presidential election, and the president himself admitted yesterday that he was thinking of "the Russia thing" when he made the decision to fire Comey.
This is only the latest example of the Trump White House working to obstruct the Russia investigation at every turn.
This is the same White House that blatantly interfered with the House Intelligence Committee's investigation, which led the Republican chairman to recuse himself. This is the same White House where Attorney General Jeff Sessions, after supposedly recusing himself from the Russia investigation, recommended the firing of the very official overseeing that same investigation.
It is clear that any credible investigation must take place far outside Trump's chain of command.
That is why I and others have said for months that a Special Counsel must be appointed to lead the Russia investigation. A Special Counsel, unlike an FBI Director or Deputy Attorney General, cannot be fired by the president.
If we do not get to the bottom of Russia's interference, Putin will have been successful in undermining our democracy. While Trump appears to be content with that result, I know many of my Republican friends are not.
While we may disagree on policy matters and we may have supported different candidates last November, all Americans should agree on the supremacy of the rule of law -- and that no person and no president should be above it.
On this issue, we must stand united in calling for a truly independent investigation.
Add your name to sign onto our petition calling for a Special Counsel to lead a truly independent investigation -- and then forward this message to at least three of your friends and family, whether Democrat or Republican, and ask them to join you.
Thank you for taking action to protect our democracy.
Sincerely,
Patrick Leahy
U.S. Senator
