Trump Tells Israelis: Arab Leaders Ready to Take Steps Toward Israel if Peace Process Gains Pace --Netanyahu voices willingness to cooperate with U.S. president on advancing peace, but hardly mentions Palestinians in public remarks and focuses on Arab states instead | 23 May 2017 | The Arab leaders U.S. President Donald Trump met with Sunday are willing to take steps toward Israel if the Israeli-Palestinian peace process makes progress, Trump told Israeli leaders Monday, a senior Israeli official told Haaretz. The official, who requested anonymity, is familiar with the details of Trump's talks with both Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and President Reuven Rivlin. Trump stressed that all the Arab leaders who were at the Riyadh summit, and especially Saudi King Salman, raised the Palestinian issue with him, the official said.

Trump Becomes First Sitting U.S. President to Visit Western Wall | 22 May 2017 | President Donald Trump placed a note in the Western Wall in Jerusalem on Monday, becoming the first sitting U.S. president to visit one of Judaism's holiest sites. Trump later called it a "great honor" to visit the wall, saying, "I can see a much deeper path, friendship with Israel." The historic visit is part of Trump's efforts to highlight "the need for unity among three of the world's great religions" on his first foreign trip, senior administration officials said.

Saudis paid U.S. veterans to lobby against law allowing 9/11 families to sue kingdom | 11 May 2017 | After Congress passed a new law [Justice Against Sponsors of Terrorism Act] allowing Sept. 11 victims' families to sue Saudi Arabia in U.S. courts, opponents mounted an expensive political campaign, including paying American military veterans to visit Capitol Hill and warn lawmakers about what they said could be unintended consequences. What few people knew, including some of the recruited veterans themselves, was that Saudi Arabia's government was largely paying for the effort, worth hundreds of thousands of dollars. Despite a World War II-era U.S. law requiring lobbyists to immediately reveal payments from foreign governments or political parties, some of the campaign's organizers failed to notify the Justice Department about the Saudi kingdom's role until months afterward, with no legal consequences.
